I am new to the forum. I am searching in multiple countries as each of my grandparents were born in a different country. Belarus, Ukraine, Moldova (Romania), Latvia and even Lithuania. Lucky me!
I have had great luck in Latvia but am stuck with the Ukraine. My grandmother arrived with her parents Sokoloff/Sokolovsky and Gerenberg/Leiberman. They were all born in Kiblich. I was able to locate a huge book from 1858 census from Kiblich. The cursive Cyrillic is very difficult to read and I am scanning each page. Any advice? Kiblich was a small town with only 5,000 Jews. I will talk later about the other grandparents.
Leah Kushner

I am researching
Dvinsk, Latvia-surnames: Kushner, Shvei, Igol
Kiblich, Ukraine, -surnames Sokoloff, Gerenberg, Lieberman, Burd, Kertzburd, Fineberg
Turov and Davyd-Horodok, Belarus: Surnames: Fuksman, Kaluzyni, Lifshiz, Fox, Hoffman
Edinet, Moldova (Romania): Surnames- Sopher, Soiffer, Sophir, Rosner

I have found documents in Latvia. I am having a difficult time in Turov, Belarus. I did find that most of my grandmother's family died April 1942 (Yad Vashem)
I found tucked in another archive a jpg book from census 1858 in Kiblich, Ukraine. It is hundreds of unindexed pages in cursive Cyrillic. Suggestions?

Thanks for any help or suggestions.
Leah Kushner

If you could give us a link to the 1858 Kiblich census, we'll certainly help you find and decipher all the relevant entries.

Please tell me the best way to upload the books for Kiblich that I found. I would like to make sure they are public records. I also would love to have help locating the surnames I am researching. I do not want to attach large files unless it is okay.

Thanks

Hello Lea, I moved you answers to the separate family theme.
Where You found Kiblich census of 1858? Can You publish a link?
About your family research in this town.
Can You tell us more about these people? What are their names? When they lived and how they connected to each other?

What are burghers?
leahkushner, It was one of the social estates in the Russian empires. Typically, transliterated as the meshchane, basically means urban dwellers, as opposed to nobles, priests, and peasants. There were also other minor social states or subclasses within the states I mentioned. The vast majority of the Jews in the Russian empire were meshchane (plural form, meshchanin - male, meshchanka - female).
You can read this short Wikipedia article on the topic: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_es ... ian_Empire

Surname document research assistance Zhitomir

#12 leahkushner » 09 дек 2021, 21:10

I am helping a family research. Members of this family started immigrating in 1976 through 1986. Many got stuck behind. I am also looking for documentation for the family who died in the Shoah, during the revolution. Her grandmother died of starvation in the streets I am having a hard time with all the various spellings of the surnames. The only spellings I have are in English. I have been translating many variations into Russian and Cyrillic cursive.
Below is more of the story. Surnames: Smolyar, Gershbain, Gershbyn, Gurshbyn, Elinson, Mandeleyel, Geper.

This is what I have.
I thought I found her grandfather on Гершбеин Моисей Лейбович (my spelling) Leib Gershbain on Pamyat Naroda b.1913 but she said he was born earlier 1905 and died when he was 36 in 1941.
He was married to Riva/Risa (Gershbain ) Malyukova b.28 Feb 1906 Zhitomir. They had (3) daughters. Sima, Poly and Beila.
Risa documents name her parents as: Meyer Mandeleyel and Tsima Geper. Born between 1880-1887?

Roman Smolyar (b. 25 Dec 1932) and Beila Gershbain (b. 30 Jan 1937) were married Nov 24, 1956 Zhitomir.
The Smolyar owned businesses but lost everything during the revolution. Roman's brother, Mishle ( Moses) Smolyar was a high ranking officer. Roman and Misha's parents are listed on documents as:
Roman Smolyar and wife Beila Gershbain Roman's brother was in a high ranking military Michle Smolyar (Misha or Moses).

Smolyar family had a successful "trees industry” and had a huge factory transporting trees to the whole Ukraine and even Russia which was lost during the revolution. Both her maternal grandfather and partner grandmother died in 1941. One in the military and the other of starvation. The grandmother who died of starvation he son, Roman was 6 and watched her die along with his little sister. Roman's parents listed on US documents. His parents died in Ukraine. Iakov Smolyar and Mary Elinson. Mary was named Mina or Minnie.

I am trying to construct the family tree for them, find documents, lost photos. Sima and Poly are still alive in their 90's living in US. I plan on interviewing them.

Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Leah Kushner.

The family came 1980. Some came earlier but they got stuck due to the Olympics. Some never immigrated.
