SS Graf Waldersee (Hamburg-Amerika Line).

Hat Maker.
=====
Hello,
My name is Elliott Terman. I am 75 years old. I have been involved in genealogy since the late 1980's - early 1990's.
One of my greatest disappointments in my efforts is not being able to find my grandfather, beyond the borders of the US. Following is a narrative using the facts I have been able to glean from the information online and through limited research in the Church of LDS libraries. I joined this group in hopes that through you kind folks I could be more successful.

Pesach Taratut: (b. 18 Jul 1877 - d. 22 Jan 1953) US name, Philip Terman:

Father's name "Leon", possibly Leib. Mother's name is unknown.

Oral history says that a "Shabbas Goy", employed by the family, told the Russian officials about Pesach. It is most likely that he was induced into army at 13 years old in 1890. He was gone from Russia/Ukraine and in the US by March, 1904.

His Petition for Naturalization, filed October 9, 1914, stated that he came from Podolsk / Podolia (Podolsk) -- [Russian gubernia, 1796-1917, in Pale of Settlement. Today, southwestern Ukraine - Volyn-Podolsk, plateau extending between the Dniester and upper Bug River valleys - Capital: Kamenetz-Podolsk], his family was told that he came from Bugapol ("near the Bug River"), which is in Ukraine. It could have been Mogliev-Podolski, but, it is more likely that he was from Kamenetz-Podolsk

He met and married Fanny (Feige Ioseleva Shimonovsky - from her passport application in Mir) Simon, possibly while still in the Russian Army, in 1901. They lived in Mir, Belarus. He left his wife and daughter Rebecca (Riwke) to go to the New York, in 1904. He traveled from Hamburg, Germany, leaving on 26 Feb1904 (the ship stopped in Boulogne, France and Plymouth, England) and arriving In New York on March 10, 1904, aboard the SS Graf Waldersee (Hamburg-Amerika Line).

According to his Declaration of Intention, his name was "Persach Taratook". The Hamburg Passenger List has him as "Peisach Taratus" and "Taratus Peisach". He was listed on the Graf Waldersee Passenger Manifest as "Peisch Taratuch". It is speculated that his real name was Terman, but due to probability that he deserted from the Russian Army to go to America, he disguised his identity by taking the name Taratut or Taratook. He worked to make enough money to send for Fanny and Rebecca. They came to the US as Taratut, in 1907. At that point, Philip was living at 92 Canal Street, NYC.

Philip was listed as a member of Mirer Young Mens' Benevolent and Educational Society, a socialistically oriented landsman fraternity from 1910. He was sponsored by M. Sandler. He was listed in the 35th Anniversary Young Mens Chevra Kadeshe Society membership (1940).

On August 19, 1909, the family was living at 342 Sheffield Avenue, Brooklyn, NY, where Nathan was born.
On April 18th, 1910, according to the 1910 Census, the family lived at 180 Sackman Street, Brooklyn, New York (presently, an empty lot off East New York Avenue, Brooklyn). Rebecca was 7, George was 2, and Nathan was 8 months. His occupation was listed as "Cap Maker". Jake Simon (24 yrs, born 1883, emigrated 1904) and Morris Kinervitch (24 yrs, born 1883, emergrated 1907) were living with them as boarders.

His Declaration of Intention to become a citizen was made on September 23, 1911. At that time he lived at 48 Clinton Street, New York City, NY (the building still stands - between Rivington and Stanton Sts, near the Brooklyn Bridge). The family lived at 291 Ashford Street, Brooklyn, NY in 1913 when Barnet was born. His Petition for Naturalization was made on October 9, 1914. He was naturalized on February 9, 1915. At that time, he and his family lived at 620 East 11th Street, NYC, NY (the building still stands - 2 blocks from Tompkins Square Park). [Eleanor Roosevelt lived at 20 East 11 St] The family is noted in the 1915 census as TERMIN (Philip, Fannie, "Becky", George, Nathan and "Benny") - E. D. #2, A. D. #12. Philip is listed as a Hat Maker.

Between 1917 and 1918, there is a listing in the Passaic, NJ telephone book for Philip Terman, Capmaker at 82 Hope Avenue.

On Sept 12, 1918, when registering for the WW I draft, they lived at 1143 Oxford Street, Woodhaven, Queens, NY. He was working for Spear & Co. as a Cap Maker. His Draft card was #2195.

The family is noted in the 1925 census living at 97-42 102 Street, Ozone Park, NY. Block #16, A.D. #05, E. D. #3, Ward #4. Phiilp is noted as being naturalized in 1913 (Cap Maker). Betty is listed as a Stenographer on ths census.

In April 1942, while living at 97-42 102 St., Ozone Park, NY (Tel. # Wi 7-0404) and working for Stein Bros. 889 Sutter Ave, Bklyn, NY as a cap maker he signed for the WW II draft. Card #U293. Arthur Simon, daughter Betty's husband, accompanied him.

He applied for a replacement Certificate of Citizenship on February 29, 1948, because the original was torn, or very worn; possibly lost. At that time he still lived with his family at 97-42 102 Street, Ozone Park, Queens, NY.

He was active in Union affairs, and was quite often asked to speak at union rallies. He was a "powerful" speaker. Strangely named individuals often came to the house. One stands out because he was called "The Flea". It was also noted that a cousin named Charney was a frequent visitor. It was quite possible that he was a member of the United Cloth Hat and Cap Makers of North America Union.

Garlick's Funeral Parlor, at 367 Grand St., NYC was used by the family to lay him to rest. The service was held at 2 PM on January 23, 1953. His sons dug the grave as there was a Gravediggers Union Strike at the time.

Any help, guidance and or advice is welcome.
Thank you,

Elliott, I moved the post to the bilingual sub-forum, and added a Russian language title.
Podolsk as a birth-place sometimes refers to the whole region (Podolsk Gubernia). More comments later!

That's Bogopol, then in Balta county of Podolia, now a neighborhood of Pervomaysk, Nikolaev obl. And the surname known in Podolia is Taratuta. The origin of the surname maybe a Ukrainian slang for "talking too much", like "blabbermouth".
The story of being taken to the military service at 13 in 1890 is an anachronism. After 1874, they drafted people at 21, and the service lasted 6 years.

Mockba,
Thank you, so much for your timely response to my post!

You have opened my eyes to some reality about life back then, especially the age of conscription (21) starting in 1874. This certainly brings my timeline into cleared prospective. It also raises the question of: if and when he was conscripted, he would have entered the army in 1898, at the age of 21...and would have been released in 1904. Ah, the speculation!
He could have been billeted in Mir in 1901 ... married to Feige ... the child Riwke born in 1902 and then he leaves in 1904 just as his conscription term is over. No desertion. And, that answers the question about the name Taratut or Taratuta. Now, it raised the question ... where did he get the name Terman from?

The name Taratuta meaning blabber-mouth in Ukrainian. It certainly fits his avocation in the US ... that of a orator.

I readily admit that I don't understand the ways in which immigrant Jews changed their names in the US. OK, some of their original surnames were hard to pronounce, or too "Slavic", or had a bad connotation, but most changes have no obvious reason ... and for whatever reason they also span this crazy legend how they were "made to change their names at Ellis Island"?
Terman is a real surname, but it is a Litvak Yiddish name, and it didn't exist in Podolia. So it wasn't Pesach's birth name, I suppose.

Are you really confident that Pesach served in the military? Any photos or letters? I don't think the servicemen were allowed to marry at all, but I may need to double check. Only a fraction of the 21 year olds actually served ... they drew numbers at random, and most young men either drew a "lucky number" or deferred for medical reasons. But later on, the immigrants used to spin these stories about "child soldier recruits", pogroms and Cossacks even in times and places where there were none. Surely there was an unbearable level of oppression in the old country, but it was most significantly an economic oppression, when, beginning in 1883, the Jews, already barred from leaving their Pale, were also barred from the countryside (with the government's implicit expectation that they will leave Russia - which millions of them did). Add to it the news of the 1903 Kishinev mega-pogrom. Even thousands miles away from Kishinev, it made the Jews rethink their reasons to stay.

Thinking of it some more: the Litvak immigration gained steam a whole generation ahead of Podolian immigration. I haven't looked at NYC but in the Balto community, first the German Jews called the shots, and later on, the Litvaks, and when the Podolians came, they were confined to the worst neighborhood and most meager opportunities for a long time. If Pesach Taratut's family spanned the divide - husband from Podolia, wife from Belarus - then perhaps it made good sense for them to become make-belief Litvaks in hope of a better opportunity?

BTW I just recently read the amazing story of the Mirrer Yeshiva in Kobe, Japan, and Shanghai, China, after learning the story of escape of a branch of my family from Warsaw through Kobe at the onset of WWII.

oztech....

Thank you, so much. It was a great clue. I just read all of the testimony of the Taratutas in the piece, but although there were many parallels, there was no connection. The family of Taratutas studied was in roughly the same time frame, but shifted ten (10) years too late. Also, none of the given names of the subsequent family members were repeated. Although this name repetition is not mandatory, it would give some validity.
Again, Thank You!

Mockba....
How I love your insight.
Peisach (Philip) and Feige (Fanny) did seem to be trying to bury themselves by moving from apartment to apartment, quickly and often. From the vague memories I have of the interaction between Philip and my maternal grandfather Shmuel (Sam) Bakstansky (Baxt) ... now that I look back on it ... there seemed to be a defensiveness on Philip's part. Philip joined Litvakisher associations, in what now appears to be an attempt to hide from his Ukrainian origins. But, there was still a connection he maintained with his family who came over. He had a full sister Rose ( b. 1876), who also took the name Terman and then married a Sol Lesansky. He also had an older half sister, Gitel (b. 1872) who took the name Terman and married a Nathan Margolis.
Gitel's family remained close and visited often. Not so, the Lesanskys. This is probably due more to proximity than relationships. The Lesansky lived in Houston, Texas and then spread north to Cleveland, Ohio and became the Krevitskys and then the Colman.
It is very curious, but the family made a full circle here ... Thelma, my aunt, was a cousin of her husband George (my father's brother) through the Lesanskys. No double-headed offspring ... but, rather talented and successful cousins of mine.
I may be reading too much into it ... but, that's most of what I have been able to pull from the remaining family members. My quest continues.

Their, branch, interestingly, are Taratutas by adoption? The Taratuta family from Teplik.
http://naschrod.nsknet.ru/aliischeva
In Yad Vashem's database, Taratuta's from Teplik predominate too. It's a long list :( and obviously I haven't checked how many of them are on the Olidort's tree and how many are "Taratutas by blood" rather than adoption. And of course Teplik is 100 miles away from your Bogopol / Pervomaysk, so there may or may not be a connection.

Elliott, are there any added geographic clues in the documents of Pesach's sisters?

(as an aside, my Podolian 2nd ggf also married a girl from today's Belarus-Lithuania border area (near Lida) and even moved there for a few years as late as 1906, and I still couldn't figure how they met)

I sent out FaceBook messages. Let's see what comes of it. Unfortunately, some of these folks are too young to be interested in genealogy. Sometimes you have to be old, like me, to get interested in folks who are dead and don't give you a hard time when you try to bore them with trivial details. ;)

I could not agree more, Elliot! There are some happy exceptions but as a general rule... I keep kicking myself for not developing an interest in these things earlier when older generations were still around... although in my family there was very little overlap between grandparents and grandchildren.

Tatiana....
Thank you so much ... only at this time, I cannot identify with any of the names in the listing as I have no clue as to whom my grandfather is related. Sad, but I was too young to even know what questions to ask. I will eventually get to that point, but I will have to get back to 1877 to find my GGF's name. one of these days ...

ETERman, it's important to note that the Olidort book states that "their" Girsh Taratut was born Eli Olidort, and adopted by a childless Taratut couple (probably to avoid conscription, as the only child of a couple would be exempt from draft). The authors don't know anything about the rest of the Taratut family, not even if this Girsh Taratut maintained any contact with his adoptive parents. Neither do the know why some of Girsh's chidren spelled their surname as Taratut and others, as Taratuta.

So it's pretty much guaranteed that the Taratutas from this book are of little use for your search :(

MOCKBA....
I dug a little deeper. It maybe nothing, but in the naturalization papers of a cousin Barnet Margolis, born 15 Apr 1902 in Ymen-Kiev, the son of Gitel Terman (possibly nee Taratut) and Nathan Margolis stated that his last residence was Bogopolia. Now if I could get a hold of the marriage papers of Gitel and Nathan from 1892, there may be a clue as to the names of her parents, and a lead to Pesach Taratut's real origin. What a long-shot. I am so thankful for all of you people making me think.
