Thank you, so much for your timely response to my post!

You have opened my eyes to some reality about life back then, especially the age of conscription (21) starting in 1874. This certainly brings my timeline into cleared prospective. It also raises the question of: if and when he was conscripted, he would have entered the army in 1898, at the age of 21...and would have been released in 1904. Ah, the speculation!
He could have been billeted in Mir in 1901 ... married to Feige ... the child Riwke born in 1902 and then he leaves in 1904 just as his conscription term is over. No desertion. And, that answers the question about the name Taratut or Taratuta. Now, it raised the question ... where did he get the name Terman from?

The name Taratuta meaning blabber-mouth in Ukrainian. It certainly fits his avocation in the US ... that of a orator.
Не все служили 6 лет, многие меньше.

Если призывник умел читать и писать, он служил 4 года, а не 6.

6 or less years - it is about military service.

Sorry for not understanding. It's the swing back and forth, from English to Russian that confused me. Then it makes a lot more sense, since soldiers could not marry. I am so thankful for the sociological education I am getting, along with the genealogical help.

How could I get access to the marriage papers of Nathan (Natan) Margolis and Gitel Taratut(a) / Terman, 1892. Or, the birth papers of Barnet Margolis 15 Apr 1902. Possible Bogapolia? It would give me a clue as to the maiden name of his mother, Gitel. Thank you.

Почему Вы решили, что солдаты не имели права жениться во время прохождения службы?
