I found my ancestor (Yakubson) however, I don't understand the listings below his name. Can someone please explain the abbreviations (b. , l., and v.)?

Also, is there additional text other than the years and the abbreviations I found with numbers after each one? I know from another later listing of Vilna merchants there are full descriptions of the business they conducted.

Dear Joel,
there is Directory, so one can't see in this book "full description of the business" etc. Full description can be find in archival files. The signatures of the archival files you can find in this Directory. All files used to compose the Directory are from LVIA (Vilnius), fond 937, inventory 1. "b" - file # by the inventory, "l" - page #; "v" means "revers of the page".
Эта книга - именной указатель, в ней не приходится ожидать полнотекстовых документов о той или иной персоне, сами документы - в архиве, в Вильнюсском LVIA. Сигнатуры дел (записей), относящихся к той или иной персоне могут быть найдены в этом указателе. При этом, "b" - номер дела по описи 1 фонда 937, "l" - номер листа в этом деле, "v" - отсылка к обороту листа.

I was hoping to find information similar to that found in the later publication (1862 - 1898) but that apparently will require an archival search.

Vilnius merchants Jews 1801-1861 (list)

"For the first time in Lithuanian historiography, lists of Vilnius merchants' Jews were published in 1801-1861. The history of merchants in Lithuania has not been explored. Historians only examined individual aspects of the socioeconomic activity of merchants. However, it did not specifically raise the question of how the legal framework for the functioning of economic structures formed, as was the practice of business. Also, such important issues as the conditions, organization and development of merchants, their role in society, economic and social activity, the attempt to look at buyers as a layer of society, etc., were not investigated. Therefore, in order to fill the gap created by historiography, it is essential to initiate new socioeconomic studies in the 19th century. In Lithuania, distinguishing one of the most important objects - the history of business people (merchants).

The book contains information related to merchants' economic activities (data on the activities of merchant companies, their trading turnover, company addresses) for researchers of the economic history of Lithuania. New knowledge about the main stratum of Vilnius business people in the 19th century. people in the first half of the year will be able to find out and just interested in the history of Lithuania. It is also probable that the history of merchants will interest the current business circles of Lithuania, and will involve them in the process of knowledge of the history of the land."

So it was confusing to see mention of a list, followed by later description discussing "data on the activities of merchant companies". This seems to be more of a description of the later book (1862 - 1898).

Joel, I didn't say there is no description of economical activity at all. I just said: "full description ... in arhival files". There is some information you asked for. For example: Я не говорил, что в этой книге вообще нет информации об экономической активности виленских купцов. Она есть, и вполне внятная. Я лишь сказал, что полнотекстовые документы - в архиве, не в книге. В ней - экстракты.
